Kottaram family is a renowned syrian catholic family from Central Travancore,which flourished in the banks of river pampa in a village called Moncombu.This small serene village is a part of Kuttandau(The only place in India which located below the sea level),Alappuzha District Of Kerala.
It has produced many high voltage personalities in the fields of Religion,Journalism,Medicine,Literary writing,Social Service,Management,Defence,Literature,Teaching,Agriculture,Business,Art etc
The legacy and aristocracy of this family is still continuing through its members across the world.
It is believed that the ancestors of Kottaram Family had invited to Moncompu from Kudamaloor to purify the oil of the famous Moncombu Bhagavathy temple by the local King.
This ceremony was a common ritual in yester years of Kerala.The Local King used to invite an aristocratic christian family member to purify the temple oil which was used for litting the main lamp of the Bhagavathi temple.The elder member of the family used to get a dakshina from the Temple as part of this tradition even ater the discontinuance of the ritual.This is officially recorded in the temple history .They had selected this family particularly because of its conversion background from Brahmanism to Christianity by St.Thomas,one of the the first disciples of jesus christ.
The Karanavar(Head)of that family had only two daughters.Both of them were extremely beautiful and noble,The christian minister of the erstwhile travancore kingdom titled THARAKAN get attracted to one of these girls.He wanted to marry that girl.But the Karanavar placed a demand before the Royal Minister,If he wants to marry his daughter,then he has to accept catholic belief and he has to build his palace in Moncombu.
The Deewan (Tharakan )belongs to a jacobite family from Niranam near Thiruvalla.He accepted the demands and built his Royal Residence(Kottaram) there,From that time onwards the family of the Deewan(Royal Minister)is known as Kottaram Family.This is the legacy of the reputed Kottaram family of Moncombu.
